Is tractor hydraulic fluid and transmission fluid the same? ›

Hydraulic oil transfers power, while tractor fluid lubricates the moving parts within a transmission. Choosing the right tractor fluid and hydraulic oil can have an effect on the performance of your equipment.

Tractor hydraulic fluid—the most popular packaged item at Pack Logix—has several different names that all mean the same thing. You may see it labeled as tractor hydraulic oil, torque converter fluid, universal tractor transmission oils (UTTO), universal dynamic tractor oil (UDT) and others.

IMPORTANT: Never check the hydraulic fluid level with the tractor running. The engine must be turned off to get an accurate read. View the oil level in sight glass (A). The level should be between the marks on the glass with the optimal level being just beneath the top mark.

The most popular and best value are Hydraulic Oil ISO 32, Hydraulic Oil ISO46, Hydraulic Oil 68 and Hydraulic Jack Oil.

Most hydraulic systems will operate satisfactorily using a variety of fluids. These include engine oil, automatic transmission fluid and oil formulated specifically for the hydraulic compartment.

It might work for a while but will ultimately cause the transmission to malfunction as it soaks into the clutches. ATF is more than just high quality hydraulic oil.

"Is it all right to mix an R&O hydraulic oil with an AW hydraulic oil in a hydraulic application?" Mixing oils with different additive packages is never recommended. Doing so could compromise the additive performance of both constituents, cause corrosion of component surfaces and lead to increased mechanical wear.

Choosing the right hydraulic fluid is crucial to guarantee the best performance and efficiency of the system. Each fluid has its specific characteristics in terms of viscosity, suitable operating conditions, anti-wear properties, etc.

ATFs are usually less viscous and designed to work under lower pressures and temperatures than hydraulic fluids. The operating temperature range of hydraulic fluids is larger i.e. they maintain their viscosity better in a broader temperature range. Also hydraulic fluids are very pure compared to ATFs.

Failure to use the correct proper oil will not only decrease the efficiency and performance of the hydraulic system, but it can also seriously shorten the life of the system and the many components that comprise it.

What happens when a tractor is low on hydraulic fluid? ›

Hydraulic oil is a type of engine oil that helps prevent friction and wear on the parts of a machine that move together, such as pistons and bearings. If hydraulic oil levels are too low, these parts can start to wear down prematurely, leading to decreased efficiency and even possible damage.

It is also important to note that hydraulic fluid degrades over time. The hydraulic fluid degrades even faster if a machine has been running too hot or if the machine has been working in extreme or harsh environments. In these instances it's probably best to change out the hydraulic fluid more often.

In case of any other unavailability Automatic Transmission fluid or ATF as it is commonly called proves to be a much better substitute for the power steering fluid in hydraulic jack. Automatic transmission fluid can also be used in other hydraulic systems as a substitute for hydraulic oil.
