What’s at stake: Oregon doing its part to set the stage for a massive matchup at Washington in two weeks in what will be the first ever top 10 showdown in the rivalry’s history. Also the last edition of this series for what will likely be many years. Oregon has won three of the last four but Stanford has an even split over the last six, eight and 10 meetings and a 50-35-1 lead in the all-time series.

Oregon offense vs. Stanford defense

The Ducks are one of the top offensive teams in the country. Bo Nix is completing passes at will to a bevy of receivers. The run game has to overcome the loss of Noah Whittington but has ample talent to do so. The offensive line has not been seriously challenged yet and that won’t change this week.

The Cardinal have one of the worst defenses in the country let alone the Pac-12. USC threw for nearly 400 yards against Stanford, which has been nearly as awful stopping the run other than bottling up Hawaii’s ground game. With the exception of David Bailey off the edge there is no Stanford defender Oregon has to be remotely concerned about in what could be an absolute field day for Bo Nix.

Oregon defense vs. Stanford offense

Preparing for two quarterbacks is seldom easy. Oregon has to do better against QB runs and the Cardinal at least present that challenge. Ben Yurosek is a major weapon but UO has taken him away before. The Ducks should be able to have their way while rushing three and four.

The faster certain players can get off the field and rested for the Washington game, the better.

Did you know?

  • Stanford’s John Paye threw for 408 yards against Oregon in 1985, the most passing yards by any player in the history of the rivalry.

Matchup to watch: Oregon’s safeties versus Stanford’s Ben Yurosek

Yurosek might be the top tight end in the Pac-12 this season, or at least end up being the most productive. He’s almost certainly another NFL bound tight end. Oregon has matched up well with him before, though Bennett Williams and Verone McKinley III are not in green and yellow anymore. Tysheem Johnson will likely get the first opportunity in coverage but won’t be alone.

They said it: “You can’t take this week lightly; Stanford’s always been a good team and going down there is always going to be a tough road game.” — right guard Steven Jones

Key stat:

Oregon has won 17 straight games when leading after the first quarter and lost 2 in a row when trailing after the first quarter.

Prediction: Oregon 42, Stanford 14
